PART-TIME VICTIM ADVOCATE OR INTAKE SPECIALIST
.6 FTE (24 hours per week)
OCVLC is hiring for one part-time position; candidates should specify whether they are applying as a Victim Advocate or Intake Specialist based on their qualifications and experience. OCVLC is a legal nonprofit that provides free legal representation to crime victims to help them assert their rights in criminal and civil protective order cases. We provide services to victims in all Oregon counties regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, religion, class, ethnicity, age, income, or immigration status.
The Victim Advocate or Intake Specialist will provide victim advocacy to crime victims, including referrals to social services or other resources for further support. This position reports to the Executive Director and works in close collaboration with OCVLC’s staff attorneys and victim advocate to ensure that victims receive appropriate legal assistance and/or advocacy services as needed.

Victim Advocate duties include:
~ Conducting intake interviews primarily over the phone with crime victims and consulting with the OCVLC’s Senior Staff Attorney regarding appropriate action or the staffing of cases.
~ Identifying and assessing crime victims’ victimization-related needs, other than the need for legal representation by OCVLC, and addressing those needs directly or by referring them to services outside the scope of OCVLC’s services.
~ Screening and routing telephone calls, mail, and electronic correspondence sent to the OCVLC’s general inbox, and conducting conflict checks for prospective new clients.
~ Developing and distributing brochures and other informational materials about OCVLC’s services.
~ Providing criminal justice support advocacy (e.g., accompaniment to file a police report, request police records, provide basic explanations of crime victims’ rights and the criminal justice system, help apply for crime victims’ compensation and the Address Confidentiality Program)
~ Providing informational and emotional support to crime victims.
~ Maintaining a current list of appropriate social-service and other resources available to crime victims throughout the state.
~ Developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, community partners, and allied organizations.
~ Participating in conferences and trainings related to crime victims’ rights and issues, and serving on task forces, committees, and work groups dedicated to improving services for crime victims.
Intake Specialist duties include:

Professional experience and skills for Victim Advocate and Intake Specialist:
Professional qualifications: specific to the Victim Advocate Position
·~ Completion of the 40-hour domestic violence advocate training
·~ Completion of the Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) Application Assistant Certificate and Crime Victims Compensation Certification within 30 days of hire.
~ An associate degree or equivalent in Criminal Justice, Corrections, Social Work, or related fields; and one (1) year of experience as an advocate in the justice system, probation, victim assistance, or other closely related areas serving vulnerable populations.
OR
~ Three (3) years of work experience as an advocate in the justice system, probation, victim assistance, or other closely related areas serving vulnerable populations.
Position’s salary, benefits, location, and hours:
This is budgeted as a .6 FTE (24 hours/week) position with a starting salary range of $23-26 for the Intake Specialist and $26-32 per hour for the Victim Advocate, depending on qualifications and relevant experience. Benefits include 50% OCVLC paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees; disability insurance for employees; and optional participation in a SIMPLE IRA with an employer match of up to 3%. Vacation accrues based on length of employment, starting with 6.8 hours of vacation per month and 50 hours of sick leave per year.

During the interview process, applicants will be required to sign a disclosure statement concerning any arrests and/or convictions of applicants and immediate family members. “Immediate family” is defined to include the applicant's spouse or domestic partner; children, stepchildren; other children living in the applicant’s home; grandparents; siblings; and anyone else with a close or intimate relationship with the applicant, such as a roommate. Information provided will not necessarily be grounds for disqualification. Because of the sensitive nature of OCVLC’s work, final applicants will be subject to a criminal history and Driver and Motor Vehicle check, as well as a background investigation. Professional experience and skills for Victim Advocate and Intake Specialist:
- Strong written and oral communication, organizational, and independent problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with the preparation of correspondence and other documents, as well as PowerPoint presentations.
- Proficiency using word-processing software, including PowerPoint, Excel, or similar software.
- Experience with website development and maintenance is a plus.
- Familiarity with various social media and strategies for social media promotion and marketing. - Ability to interact with diverse populations in a culturally responsive manner.
- Experience with victims of crime or other people who have experienced trauma is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with victim-related and/or other social-service agencies in Oregon, particularly in the
- Greater Portland area, a plus.
- Experience with, and knowledge of, the structure of the criminal justice system is a strong plus.
- Bilingual/Spanish fluency strongly preferred.
